Detailed scheduling of production operations

Planning is an important aspect of ensuring the effectiveness of a production company. Quick changes on the market, a wide range of products, required short response times and unforeseen events cause continuous changes in production plans. These facts require a computer-supported, responsive, flexible and efficient planning process.

Planning Process Informatization enables:

  • Stock reduction,
  • Increase in productivity,
  • Shortening flow times,
  • Increase in market share, and
  • Cheaper and faster detailed planning.

Information support to detailed planning occupies an important role in the integrated information support to the company – micro planning or scheduling of production operations.

Placing Scheduling in the Company Structure

Information architecture of a large company is based on the use of ERP and MES systems of renowned producers. Information system for detailed scheduling (i.e. ISR) is placed between the ERP and MES systems. The integration of the abovementioned systems is implemented by program interfaces for data exchange. The described information architecture supports the production planning process from an image. Inputs, work processes or activities, decision points, outputs and the progress of planning process implementation are shown.

In real terms different simplifications and also extensions of the shown process can be expected as in practice even comparable companies have very different views of planning. Special features in a company technology or organization have strong influence on the requirements regarding the data that appear in the planning process. The quality of the planning process output (i.e. the operation schedule on individual machines) depends directly on input data.

Rough Planning

Rough planning is implemented to balance the production forecasts and sales tasks on the one hand, and the need for products and materials with planed (MRP II), production and purchase tasks on the other hand. Rough planning is implemented with the purpose of:

  • Calculating the need for quantities of semi-manufactured products and materials;
  • Recording bottlenecks;
  • Informing on capacity occupation or rough capacity planning;
  • Defining the earliest start date and the latest termination date for individual orders.

Detailed Planning or Scheduling

Detailed planning or scheduling is implemented for current production operations considering real source capacities for the entire production process by using pre-prepared algorithms. It is executed primarily automatically, while manual interventions in the plan on the electronic plan table are possible. Computer-supported scheduling is executed with the intention of:

  • Reduction in production flow times, interphase stocks and reduction of production costs;
  • Visualization of the scheduling of production operations;
  • Monitoring of actually performed work regarding detailed scheduling;
  • Support in intervening with the plan at sudden events in the production or on the market;
  • Transmission or attainment of corresponding information on planed data to anybody who needs it;
  • Management of dynamic production environment and at the same time improvement of client servicing.

INEA executes detailed planning or scheduling of production operations with Preactor Scheduling Systems.
